Politics in those days - Aurangzeb was considerate towards his father Shahjahan. He just Imprisoned him. But all his brothers and their families were executed. This was the custom of Mughal succession. The male heirs used to fight it out until death and the victor takes the crown. Shahjahan did the same in his time.
